THE RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
When people talk about the left, they often focus on historical philosophy: Marx, Engels, Lenin, Trotsky, Mao, Gramsci, Hegel, Marcuse, and others. They quote the theory, point to past attempts at communism like the Bolshevik Revolution or the Cultural Revolution, and cite Yuri Bezmenov as if nothing has changed since the 1980s.
This kind of analysis is useful. It provides a foundation for understanding the origins of the ideology and the likely outcomes of similar attempts.
But my methodology for studying the far left today is very different.
You are not going to read about the dead philosophers in this book. You’re going to learn what the left believes now, and what they teach each other behind closed doors.
Sometimes those beliefs mirror the historical philosophy, and sometimes they don’t. The ideology has mutated significantly since it was created. I call this gain-of-function Marxism.
